Two pieces of masonry work sit outside what most people picture as chimney masonry. The first is the firebox itself. Firebrick and the thin refractory joints between them erode under heat and moisture, and once those joints have opened and the brick is cracking through, the firebox has stopped doing its one structural job of keeping heat away from what surrounds it. Rebuilding one is laid in refractory mortar, not patched with household cement. The second is the base of the stack outside.
