A

Ash dump
A small trapdoor in the floor of some masonry fireboxes that lets you sweep ash down into a hollow chamber below, emptied later through a cleanout door at the base of the chimney. It is a convenience feature of older, full-masonry construction; plenty of Florida fireplaces, especially factory-built units, never had one. If yours exists, the door should sit flush and close fully; a stuck-open ash dump is an air leak into the firebox.

B

Backpuffing
A momentary reversal of draft that pushes a puff of smoke into the room instead of up the flue. Common causes are a cold or undersized flue, wind pressure at the top of the chimney, or a tightly sealed house where kitchen and bath exhaust fans are competing for air. Florida homes closed up for air conditioning are especially prone to that last one: the house is starved for makeup air, and the chimney is the easiest opening to pull it through.

C

CBS / stucco chase
Much of Florida is built in CBS (concrete block with a stucco finish), and many chimneys here match: a block or wood-framed enclosure finished in stucco rather than exposed brick. On these chimneys the outer stucco shell and its caulked seams are the raincoat, so the classic failure is not crumbling mortar joints but hairline stucco cracks and failed sealant letting wind-driven rain behind the shell. Staining or bubbling on the stucco is the same warning sign that efflorescence is on brick.
Chase
The framed box built around a factory-built fireplace flue to make it look like a chimney from the street. It is siding or stucco over framing, not structural masonry, and it is topped by a metal chase cover instead of a concrete crown. Chases are everywhere in Florida subdivisions built with prefab fireplaces, and their weak points are the cover on top and the seams in the cladding.
Chase cover
The metal lid that closes off the top of a chase, with a hole for the flue pipe. Cheap ones are galvanized steel that rusts, and flat ones pond water after every afternoon storm until they pit through and leak straight down inside the chase. Rust streaks running down the sides of a chase almost always trace back to the cover; the durable replacement is a properly sloped stainless or heavy-gauge cover. Related service →
Chimney cap
The hooded fitting installed over the top of the flue that keeps out rain and animals while letting smoke exit, usually with a mesh screen around the sides. An uncapped flue in Florida is effectively an open drainpipe into the house, since the summer pattern of near-daily storms sends water down it all season, and it is also the most common entry point for raccoons, squirrels, and nesting birds. A cap is one of the cheapest pieces of protection on the whole chimney. Related service →
Chimney fire
The ignition of creosote deposits inside the flue itself. Creosote is flammable, and a hot enough fire below can light the buildup above: sometimes dramatically, with a roaring sound and flames at the top of the stack, but often slowly and quietly, discovered only later as cracked flue tiles or warped metal. Even a small chimney fire can damage the liner enough that the next fire puts heat where it should never go, which is why a flue that has had one should be inspected before it is used again. Chimney liner
The inner channel of the flue that actually contains the smoke and hot gases. Traditionally it is stacked clay tiles, in modern retrofits usually a stainless steel pipe, and occasionally a cast-in-place cement liner. The liner protects the surrounding masonry from heat and corrosive flue gases and sizes the passage correctly for the appliance below. A cracked or gapped liner is a serious finding because it lets heat and gases reach parts of the house that were never meant to see them. Related service →
Chimney sweep
Both the trade and the service: cleaning the flue by brushing or rodding out creosote, soot, and debris such as leaves and nests. The point is not tidiness. It is removing the flammable layer before it can fuel a chimney fire and clearing blockages so gases exit instead of backing into the house. In Florida the debris side of the job matters as much as the creosote side, because a lightly used flue still collects storm-blown material and animal nests. Related service →
Cleanout door
A small metal access door near the base of a masonry chimney (often outside at ground level or in the garage) used to remove ash and fallen debris from the bottom of the flue. It should close snugly and stay shut; a rusted or loose cleanout door leaks air that disturbs draft and, in Florida, lets wind-driven rain into the base of the stack.
Corbeling
A masonry technique where each course of brick steps outward past the one below it, used where a chimney needs to widen or transition, classically inside the smoke chamber. Corbeled steps left rough and unparged create ledges that catch creosote and disrupt smooth airflow, which is why a well-finished smoke chamber has its corbeling coated over into a smooth funnel.
Counter-flashing
The upper layer of a two-part flashing system: metal embedded into the chimney itself, cut into a mortar joint or behind the stucco, that laps down over the base flashing on the roof. The two layers overlap without being sealed rigidly together, so the roof and chimney can move independently while water still sheds outward. When counter-flashing pulls loose or its sealed edge fails, wind-driven rain gets behind the whole system.
Creosote
The dark residue left when wood smoke cools and condenses on the inside of the flue, and the fuel for chimney fires. It is flammable at every stage. It builds in three recognized stages: first a dusty, flaky soot that brushes off easily; then a crunchy, tar-like layer; and finally a glazed, shiny hardened coating that is both the hardest to remove and the most dangerous. The wetter the wood and the cooler the flue, the faster it accumulates. Related service →
Cricket
A small peaked diverter built on the roof against the uphill side of a chimney, splitting the water flowing down the roof so it runs around the stack instead of damming against it. Wide chimneys need one most, and Florida’s high-volume summer downpours make the difference obvious: without a cricket, water ponds against the back of the chimney and works at the flashing until it finds a way in.
Crown
The sloped concrete or mortar surface that tops a masonry chimney, shedding water away from the flue and off the edges past the brick below. It takes the full force of sun and rain, so it cracks before almost anything else, and every crack is a direct channel into the core of the masonry, which Florida’s near-daily summer rain exploits immediately. D

Damper
The movable plate that opens the flue when a fire is burning and closes it the rest of the year. In Florida the closed position does most of the work: it keeps conditioned indoor air from escaping up the stack and keeps hot, humid outdoor air (plus rain and animals, if there is no cap) from coming down it. Dampers come in two main types, the traditional throat damper and the top-sealing damper.
Direct-vent
A sealed gas fireplace design that draws its combustion air from outdoors and exhausts outdoors through a two-channel pipe, usually straight through a wall, with no traditional chimney needed. Because the unit never breathes room air, it works well in tightly sealed, air-conditioned Florida homes where an open fireplace would struggle for draft. It is the most common way to add a fireplace to a house that was built without one.
Draft
The pressure difference that pulls air through the fire and carries smoke up the flue, created mostly by the temperature gap between hot flue gases and the outside air. Florida’s mild winters mean that gap is smaller than in cold climates, so natural draft here is weaker and details matter more: flue height and size, a warm flue at startup, and enough makeup air in the house. Weak draft shows up as smoke drifting into the room and fires that never quite get going.

E

Efflorescence
The chalky white staining on brick or block, left behind when water travels through the masonry, dissolves minerals, and evaporates at the surface. The powder itself is harmless and brushes off. The message is not. Efflorescence means water is moving through the chimney’s interior, and in Florida’s rain-heavy climate it is often the first visible sign of a crown, cap, or joint problem upstream. F

Firebox
The chamber where the fire actually burns, lined with firebrick in a masonry fireplace, or formed of metal panels in a factory-built unit. Its job is containing extreme heat inches from the wood framing of the house, so gaps in firebox joints or cracked refractory panels are a real safety finding, not a cosmetic one. Crumbling mortar between firebricks is one of the most common issues found during inspections. Related service →
Firebrick
Dense refractory brick made to withstand direct flame contact, used to line the firebox. It is laid with thin joints of refractory mortar rather than ordinary masonry mortar, because standard mortar breaks down under repeated high heat. Replacing failed firebrick joints with the correct refractory material is a routine repair; smearing regular mortar in there is a patch that will not last.
Flashing
The sheet-metal system that waterproofs the intersection where the chimney passes through the roof. It is statistically the most leak-prone spot on the whole structure, because two materials that move differently meet there. Florida is hard on flashing: hurricanes flex it, wind-driven rain pressure-tests every lap, and heat cycles fatigue the sealants. A flashing leak classically shows up as a ceiling stain near the chimney after heavy sideways rain. Related service →
Flue
The vertical passage that carries smoke and combustion gases from the fireplace or appliance up and out of the house. The chimney is the structure; the flue is the channel inside it, and one chimney can contain several flues serving different appliances. Nearly everything else in this glossary exists to keep the flue open, intact, and drawing properly.
Flue tile
The square or round clay sections, stacked and mortared, that form the liner in a traditional masonry chimney. Clay handles heat well but is brittle: a chimney fire, lightning strike, or shifting foundation can crack tiles or open the joints between them. Cracked flue tiles are a common reason a chimney gets relined with stainless steel rather than repaired tile by tile.

G

Gas log set
A set of ceramic logs over a gas burner, installed in an existing fireplace to give flames at the flip of a switch. Vented sets burn with the damper open and behave like a wood fire from the chimney’s perspective; vent-free sets are a different category with their own cautions. Gas logs are popular in Florida, where fires are ambiance for a few cool evenings a year and nobody wants to store firewood in the humidity. Related service →

H

Hearth
The non-combustible floor of the fireplace and its extension outward into the room, usually brick, stone, or tile. Its purpose is catching embers and shielding the flooring from radiant heat, and how far it must extend is a code question: requirements vary by municipality, so verify locally before remodeling around a fireplace. Cracked hearth surfaces are usually cosmetic but can signal settling underneath.

L

Level 1 inspection
The basic tier in the industry’s three-level inspection framework: a visual examination of all readily accessible parts of the chimney and flue, appropriate when the system has been in regular service and nothing about it has changed. The pro checks the structure, connections, and flue for soundness, blockage, and combustible deposits without opening walls or removing components. It is the standard annual once-over for a system with no red flags.
Level 2 inspection
The middle inspection level, which adds everything accessible without damage (attic, crawl space, roof) and an examination of the flue interior. Industry practice calls for it when something has changed: a property sale, a new appliance or fuel type, or after an event that could have damaged the chimney, such as a chimney fire, a lightning strike, or a hurricane. For Florida buyers, this is the inspection worth asking about before closing on a house with a fireplace. Related service →
Level 3 inspection
The most invasive inspection level, reserved for when a serious hidden hazard is suspected and cannot be evaluated any other way. It includes removal of components, such as chase covers, interior walls, or sections of masonry, to reach concealed areas. It is rare, and a pro should be able to explain exactly what finding from a lower-level inspection justifies opening things up.
Lintel
The horizontal member, usually a steel angle, spanning the top of the fireplace opening and carrying the masonry above it. In Florida’s humid air, steel lintels rust, and rust expands: a corroding lintel slowly jacks the bricks above it apart, which is why cracked masonry over a fireplace opening so often traces back to the steel underneath. Surface rust is normal; flaking, swelling steel with cracked brick above is a structural repair.

M

Masonry chimney
A chimney built on site from brick, block, or stone, standing on its own footing and typically lined with clay flue tiles. It is the heaviest, most permanent version of the structure, and the one where mortar joints, crowns, and water management decide its lifespan. The alternative construction, common in newer Florida homes, is a factory-built fireplace inside a framed chase. Related service →
Mortar joint
The lines of mortar bonding the bricks of a chimney together and, by design, the sacrificial part of the wall. Mortar is deliberately softer and more porous than brick so that weathering concentrates in the joints, which can be renewed, rather than in the bricks, which cannot. Florida’s humidity and daily summer rain run that wear cycle quickly, which is why joint condition is the first thing to check on any brick chimney here.

P

Parging
A coat of mortar troweled over rough masonry to create a smooth surface. In chimneys it most often refers to parging the smoke chamber: smoothing over the stepped corbeling so gases flow in a clean funnel to the flue instead of tumbling over ledges that catch creosote. An unparged smoke chamber is one of the most common findings in older masonry fireplaces.
Pilot light
The small standing flame in a gas fireplace or log set that ignites the main burner on demand. A pilot that will not stay lit is the classic gas-fireplace complaint, and the usual culprit is the thermocouple that supervises it rather than the gas supply. In Florida, pilots left off through the long off-season also invite spiders and debris into the pilot assembly, a frequent cause of hard starting in fall. Related service →
Prefab / factory-built chimney
A fireplace and flue system manufactured as a listed unit (a metal firebox and metal chimney pipe) installed inside a framed chase rather than built from masonry. Parts are model-specific: refractory panels, chase covers, and caps must match the unit, and when a discontinued model’s parts run out, replacement of the whole unit enters the conversation. A large share of Florida fireplaces built from the 1980s onward are factory-built.

R

Repointing
Renewing failed mortar joints by removing the deteriorated mortar and packing in fresh. In everyday American usage, the same job as tuckpointing, and contractors use the two words interchangeably. Whichever word appears on the estimate, the substance to check is the same: grinding to proper depth and matching the new mortar’s hardness to the original.

S

Smoke chamber
The funnel-shaped space above the firebox that gathers smoke and compresses it into the narrower flue. Its walls are often built as stepped corbeled brick, and when those steps are left rough, they catch creosote and disturb airflow, which is why a smooth, parged smoke chamber is what a pro wants to see. It is one of the least visible and most commonly deficient parts of an older fireplace.
Smoke shelf
The flat ledge behind the damper, at the base of the smoke chamber. It deflects downdrafts that slip past the top of the chimney and catches whatever falls in: debris, nesting material, and rainwater in an uncapped flue. A wet or debris-loaded smoke shelf is a routine source of the musty odor Florida homeowners notice coming from an unused fireplace in humid weather.
Spalling
When the face of a brick or a patch of concrete flakes, chips, or pops off, driven by moisture trapped inside the material. Water gets in through failed joints or a cracked crown, saturates the masonry, and pressure from salt crystallization (or, in the Panhandle, an occasional hard freeze) breaks the surface off from within. Spalling means water intrusion has moved past the sacrificial mortar and is now consuming the brick itself, which escalates the repair from repointing to brick replacement. Related service →
Spark arrestor
The mesh screen built into or around a chimney cap that stops embers from escaping onto the roof while also blocking animals from entering the flue. The mesh openings are a balance: fine enough to catch sparks and exclude wildlife, open enough not to choke draft or clog quickly with soot. A crushed or rusted-through screen is a common reason animals end up in Florida flues.
Stack effect
The physics behind draft: a column of air warmer than its surroundings rises, pulling air in at the bottom of the column. In a Florida summer the effect often runs in reverse. The air-conditioned house is cooler and denser than outdoors, so air tends to sink and push down the flue, carrying soot and creosote odor into the room. That reverse flow is why a closed damper, or a top-sealing damper, earns its keep here even in months when nobody lights a fire.

T

Thermocouple
A small safety sensor that sits in the pilot flame and generates a tiny electrical current from its heat; that current holds the gas valve open. If the pilot goes out, the current stops and the valve closes, so gas cannot flow unburned. A worn thermocouple is the most common reason a pilot light will not stay lit, and it is an inexpensive part to replace.
Throat damper
The traditional damper: a cast-iron or steel plate mounted in the throat of the fireplace, just above the firebox, operated by a handle inside the opening. Decades of heat, rust, and debris leave many of them warped, stuck, or sealing poorly, and a metal plate alone never seals tightly. In Florida a leaky throat damper mostly costs you conditioned air and lets humid outdoor air into the flue year-round.
Top-sealing damper
A damper mounted at the very top of the flue, closed by a spring-loaded lid with a rubber gasket and operated by a cable running down to the firebox. The gasket seals far better than a metal throat plate, and the closed lid also keeps rain, humid air, and animals out of the entire flue. That is a strong fit for Florida, where the flue sits unused and exposed most of the year. It is a common upgrade when an old throat damper has rusted beyond repair.
Tuckpointing
The repair of failing mortar joints: grinding out cracked, crumbling, or washed-out mortar to proper depth and packing in fresh mortar matched to the original in hardness and color. Done well it is nearly invisible and restores the chimney’s watertightness before water reaches the bricks themselves. In practice the word is used interchangeably with repointing. Related service →

V

Ventless (vent-free) fireplace
A gas appliance designed to burn so cleanly that it vents into the room itself, with no flue. Everything it produces, including water vapor and combustion byproducts, stays in the living space, which deserves extra thought in a closed-up, air-conditioned Florida home where added indoor moisture is unwelcome. Rules on ventless appliances vary by jurisdiction, so verify what is permitted locally before buying one, and treat its oxygen-depletion safety sensor as non-negotiable equipment.

W

Weather cap
Another name for a chimney cap (also called a rain cap), the hooded cover over the flue opening. Different manufacturers and estimates use different words for the same part; whichever term appears, the job is identical: keep rain, animals, and debris out while letting flue gases exit freely.
Wind-driven rain
Rain pushed sideways by wind, which behaves completely differently from rain falling straight down: it is forced into vertical surfaces, under laps, and through joints that ordinary rain never touches. Florida’s thunderstorms and hurricanes make it the default leak-finder here: a chimney that stays dry through a calm shower can leak badly in a squall. It is the reason caps, crowns, flashing, and joints all get judged by how they handle water arriving horizontally, not just from above. Related service →
