When the baffle burns through, sags, or crumbles, both of those stop. You get less warmth from the same wood, which owners blame on the wood, and smoke that used to burn twice now leaves as smoke. Unburned smoke is what lands in the flue as creosote, so a failed baffle is a chimney problem as much as a heating one. The perforated air tubes fail alongside it: they warp, split, plug with ash, and drop out of the brackets the baffle holds up. Do not burn with the baffle out or in pieces; the top of the firebox then takes direct flame.
Firebrick, and an Air Control That Will Not Move
Firebrick in a stove does a different job from firebrick in a masonry fireplace, which is why this is not firebox repair. There, brick separates fire from the structure behind it. In a stove, brick shields the shell, keeping heat off the steel or iron. A cracked brick still tight against its neighbors is doing that. One that has crumbled, lost a corner, or slid down its wall leaves bare shell in the flame path, worth knowing before anyone quotes a full set.
The air control is the other routine find. Its rod runs through the hottest, dirtiest part of the stove, and Florida humidity works on the linkage between burning seasons. It seizes in its track, or the damper plate at the far end corrodes until it stops following the lever. The tell is a control that moves freely while the fire ignores it. Do not force it: the casting the rod is pinned into is the expensive part.
Catalytic Stoves: The Combustor Is a Consumable
If your stove has a bypass lever and a temperature probe on top, it is catalytic. Inside sits a coated honeycomb that lets smoke ignite at a far lower temperature than it otherwise would. You run with the bypass open until the stove warms, then close it and route exhaust through the element.
That element does not last the life of the stove, and owners are rarely told so when they buy. It plugs with fly ash, breaks up at the edges from thermal shock, and its coating can be ruined by anything with no business in a firebox: painted or treated lumber, glossy paper, trash. The tells: the stove only burns well with the bypass open, the probe never climbs once the bypass is closed, and chimney smoke no longer thins out. Gentle cleaning and resealing the gaskets around the element and the bypass door recover some units, since smoke that can go around the honeycomb will.
