A crown and a cap are different parts, and confusing them costs money. The cap is metal over the flue opening; the crown is the slab covering the masonry around it. A crown that works has three features: slope from the flue down to the edges, an overhang past the face of the brick with a drip groove underneath so runoff falls clear of the face, and a compressible gap at the flue tile, because that tile expands every time a fire is lit and a crown bonded to it splits from the middle outward. What gets built instead is a mortar wash, thin, flush with the brick and unreinforced. When it cracks, rain goes into the top of the wall and into the joints around the tile.
