Chimney Sweep in Vero Beach, FL

Creosote is condensed wood smoke. When flue-gas temperature falls below roughly 250 degrees the vapors in it plate onto the flue wall, and the deposit hardens in stages: a dry sooty layer that brushes off, a crunchy tar-flake layer, and finally a hard glaze that a brush will not touch and that needs rotary tooling or a chemical modifier first. Two things drive it down that path. Wet fuel, which in humid air means wood that has not been stacked off the ground, top-covered and given real drying time, and a small smoldering fire that never gets the flue hot. Salt-soaked wood is worse again: driftwood, or any timber that has sat in seawater, releases chlorides as it burns that attack metal throughout the system. If you suspect an active chimney fire, leave the home and call 911 before requesting chimney service.

Cleaning scope depends on the fireplace or appliance, the accessible vent path, and the buildup found inside it. An obstruction or damaged component may require separate work rather than more sweeping. Ask which passages the cleaning covers and whether an inspection or any proposed repair is a separate item before comparing estimates.

• What fuel does the fireplace or stove use?
• When was it last used and cleaned, if known?
• Have you noticed smoke in the room, odors, debris or animal sounds?
