The visit starts before anyone touches the chimney
The first few minutes of a sweep visit are all questions and setup, and they matter more than they look. A good pro wants to know when you last burned, what you burn (wood, gas logs, nothing for years) and whether you have noticed smoke, smells, or leaks. The fireplace needs to be completely cold: not "the fire was last night" cold, but genuinely out, ideally a full day since the last burn. Warm coals and a running vacuum are a bad combination, and a warm flue is still moving air in ways that make dust control harder.
Then comes the protection layer. Expect drop cloths or runners from the door to the hearth, a larger cloth spread across the floor in front of the fireplace, and the work area effectively tented off. The vacuum gets positioned and, in most setups, the firebox opening is partially sealed so the machine controls the airflow through it. None of this is theater. It is the containment system, and the visit does not really begin until it is in place.
Your part of the prep is small but useful: clear the mantel and hearth of anything decorative, move nearby furniture and rugs as instructed, and keep pets away from the work area during the visit. Preparing before the appointment helps keep the work area accessible.
Rods and brushes: how the flue actually gets cleaned
The core of a sweep is mechanical and almost old-fashioned: a brush, sized and shaped to match your flue, driven through its full length on flexible rods. The match matters. A round metal liner takes a different brush than a square clay flue, and metal liners generally get softer poly bristles because stiff wire can scratch the liner’s surface. The pro attaches a rod, scrubs a section, adds another rod, and works the brush through the entire flue: the same motion, joint by joint, from the firebox to the top.
What the brush is doing is pure friction. Soot and creosote (the dark residue that condenses out of smoke onto the flue walls) bond to the surface, and the bristles knock them loose so gravity can take over. The debris falls down the flue, lands on the smoke shelf and in the firebox, and gets collected by the vacuum. Most Florida sweeps run bottom-up, working from inside the house; some situations call for the top-down version from the roof, with the firebox sealed and the vacuum still doing the collection at the bottom. Either way, the physics is the same: scrub, drop, collect.
One honest limitation worth knowing: a brush removes soot and the flaky, crusty stages of creosote well. The third stage, a hardened, shiny glaze, has essentially baked onto the flue and does not brush off. If a pro finds glaze, expect a conversation about it rather than a promise that the brush handled it, because pretending otherwise leaves the most flammable form of creosote right where it was.
Why the dust stays in the chimney and not in your house
The question everyone quietly worries about (will this wreck my living room) has a physics answer, not a carefulness answer. The vacuum runs the entire time the brush is moving, and its job is less about sucking up debris than about controlling air pressure. With the firebox opening mostly sealed and the machine pulling air out of it, the pressure inside the fireplace is lower than the pressure in your room. Air can only move one direction across that boundary: from the room into the chimney. Dust would have to travel upstream against that flow to escape, and it cannot.
Dust containment matters because soot particles are extremely fine. A careful pro protects the work area, contains the fireplace opening, and uses professional dust-control equipment suited to the job while brushing and cleaning. A household shop vacuum is not a substitute for a chimney-cleaning setup.
The flue is only part of the job
A real sweep covers the whole smoke path, not just the vertical pipe. The firebox walls get brushed down. The damper (the metal plate that opens and closes the throat of the chimney) gets worked, brushed, and checked, which in Florida is its own small event: a damper that sat closed through years of humid summers is often rusted stiff or frozen entirely, and the sweep visit is usually when that gets discovered. Just above it, the smoke chamber, the angled funnel that narrows the big firebox opening into the flue, collects buildup on its sloped walls and gets scrubbed too.
Then there is the smoke shelf, the flat ledge behind the damper that most homeowners have never seen. It is the chimney’s catch basin: everything the rain washes down and everything that falls in from above lands there. In Florida that means soot, yes, but also leaf litter, shreds of nesting material from birds or raccoons, and occasionally standing dark sludge (soot mixed with rainwater) that says more about the top of the chimney than the bottom. Clearing the shelf matters because debris piled behind the damper chokes airflow and holds moisture and odor against the masonry, which is a big part of why neglected Florida chimneys smell worst in August.
The visual check that rides along with every sweep
A sweep is also a slow, well-lit tour of your chimney’s interior, and an experienced pro is reading the system the whole time. The debris itself is the first data: dull black soot means a normal-burning system, heavy flakes mean it went too long between cleanings, shiny glaze signals a slow-smoldering burn habit and a fire risk that brushing cannot fix. The pro is also watching how the brush travels (catching or hanging up at the same spot every pass can mean a shifted flue tile or an obstruction) and looking up the flue with a light at what the beam reaches: open joints, cracked tiles, rust flaking off a metal liner, moisture staining.
The firebox end tells its own story. Rust trails on the damper, white mineral staining on the brick, damp or musty smoke-shelf debris, and crumbling firebox mortar joints all point at water getting in from above, which in rainy Florida is the most common thing a sweep visit turns up. It is worth being clear about what this is and is not: it is an honest visual check that rides along with the cleaning, and it catches a lot. It is not the same as a dedicated chimney inspection, which is a systematic top-to-bottom evaluation of the whole structure: the kind NFPA 211 says every chimney should get annually. The sweep’s look answers "did I see anything concerning while cleaning"; the inspection answers "is this system sound. "
How long it all takes
Sweep duration varies with buildup, system type, access, setup, containment, and what is found. Confirm the appointment window for the specific job instead of relying on a fixed duration. Light use also does not prove a flue is clean, because burn quality, fuel, moisture, and long idle periods affect deposits.
What stretches the visit is almost always what the chimney has been through, not the brushing. Years of no use with no cap means animal nesting and debris to extract. Heavy buildup or glaze means slower, more deliberate work and a different conversation. Roof access (a steep pitch, a tall stack, a top-down job) adds time. This is also the quiet argument for booking in a Florida summer rather than December: schedules are open, there is no burning season to interrupt, and any problem the visit uncovers has months of runway to get fixed before you want your first fire.
What happens if the pro finds something
Finding something during a sweep is common. The visit is often the first time in years anyone has looked at the system closely, and the way it is handled tells you a lot about who you hired. The right sequence is simple: the pro shows you what they found where you can see it yourself when it is safe and practical, at the firebox or from the ground, explains the mechanism in plain language (this is water coming past the crown, this is glaze from smoldering fires, this is a damper rusted open) and puts the fix in a free estimate you can sit with. What it should never feel like is a countdown clock. Alarm plus pressure plus a today-only price is the pattern of a scam, not a diagnosis.
Two findings do justify stopping: a blocked flue and glazed creosote both mean no fires until they are resolved, because one traps combustion gases in the house and the other is fuel waiting for a spark. Everything else (worn mortar, a rusted damper, early water staining) goes on a punch list with honest priorities, and a slow-moving problem in August can usually wait for a scheduled repair in September. Either way you end the visit knowing what the debris said, what the pro saw, and what, if anything, comes next, with the number fixed in writing before any work begins. That is the whole point of the visit: not just a cleaner flue, but an actual read on the system you are about to light a fire under.
