The crown is the concrete or mortar top covering the masonry around the flue tile. The cap is the metal lid above it. Confusing them costs money, because they fail differently. A proper crown is cast with a slope, projects a couple of inches past the brick with a drip edge cut underneath so runoff leaves the wall instead of running back down it, and stops short of the flue tile with a flexible joint rather than being packed tight against it. That last detail matters wherever masonry cycles between sun and rain, as a Clermont stack does through the summer: tile and surrounding masonry expand at different rates, and a rigid joint between them opens first. A thin mortar wash sloped the wrong way is not a crown.
