You can run a crude version of step one yourself: open the damper, hold a lit stick of incense near the throat, and watch which way the smoke goes. Then open a window in the same room and watch again. A direction that improves puts air supply on the list before anyone quotes you work on the flue.
What it cannot do is rank the causes against each other, which is the whole reason the measured version exists.

Geometry is the other half of the test, and the half no homeowner can eyeball. Openings get widened in remodels, glass doors come off, and the flue behind them never changes, so a proportion fault can be original to the house or manufactured decades after it was built. Timing is the tell.
A symptom that has never varied is pointing at a cause that never varies. A fireplace that misbehaved from its first fire, under every wind and in every season, is reporting proportion or height, not a house pressure that changes by the hour. That distinction sends the job somewhere completely different.
The mismatch runs the other way too. A gas set or a small insert fitted under a passage built for an open wood fire is being asked to heat far more cross-section than it can, and the readings show it: the pull stays weak while the walls stay cold enough to collect the moisture the exhaust is carrying. Both figures, the opening and the flue serving it, are cheap to establish and expensive to assume.
